Episode #191: Harvest Horror Fest – Leprechaun (1993)
Wednesday Oct 07, 2020
Wednesday Oct 07, 2020
After 11 months of waiting it is finally here! Our Third Annual Harvest Horror Fest! To kick off our month of horror reviews everyone’s favorite horror host Mike Talent dipped into his bag of gold and pulled the original Leprechaun from 1993. Scary but not horror topics include cereal, wells, and the imminent death of movie theaters.
What can we say about the Leprechaun. It is a very unique horror film that is fun, gory, and campy. The acting is real rough (except Warwick Davis, he kills it!) thankfully Jennifer Anniston has improved her acting skills since 1993. The makeup is pretty decent for the time period and the special effects are on par with the film's budget, awful. Mike Talent still really loved the re-watch of this classic 90’s horror film awarding it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt was not a big fan. He does suggest you watch it at least once in your life to experience the classic film. He graciously gives the Leprechaun 2 out of 5 Reels.
We continue our Third Annual Harvest Horror Fest next week with one of Matt’s picks going back even farther in time taking a stab at the original Friday the 13th. If you want to watch it with us it’s available on AMC if you still have cable or you can rent it for $3 on Amazon Prime Video. Thanks for hanging out and listening to our spooky pod. We will chat at you next week!

Episode #190: Tributary - Get Duked!
Wednesday Sep 30, 2020
Wednesday Sep 30, 2020
Sick and tired of politics yet? GREAT! Why not sit down and laugh while listening to the Talent-less Mike of Mystery and Matt review the Amazon Original Get Duked! Better topics than this movie include Prescott Valley professional sports, The Boys TV show, and our Third Annual Harvest Horror Fest!
Well this is awkward, maybe not awkward but it has been a long time since Mike and Matt didn’t agree at least a little bit on a film. Mike Talent really enjoyed Get Duked! Matt on the other hand really hated this film and felt he wasted his time. This is not necessarily a bad film but it is definitely not for everyone. It is a hip-hop manhunt drug comedy that takes place in the Scottish Highlands. There are some very funny parts and the scenery is beautiful. The acting was decent from our four leads who are unknown here in the United States.
Mike really enjoyed Get Duked! and did not have any issues with the thick Scottish accents. He graciously awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt on the complete opposite side of the coin disliked the Amazon Original and thinks you should skip it. He awards the film 1.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week is the start of Mike’s favorite time of the year, our Third Annual Harvest Horror Fest! For our new listeners we review nothing but horror films for the month of October. Our first horror flick picked by Mike is 1993’s Leprechaun starring Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston. If you would like to watch it with us it is currently streaming on HBO and HBO Max. Thanks for hanging out and listening to our little pod. We will chat at you next week!

Episode #189: Legacy - Paul
Wednesday Sep 23, 2020
Wednesday Sep 23, 2020
Hi everybody! It is Wednesday and that means new podcast day! For today’s episode Mike and Matt travel back to 2011 to review a fun comedic alien sci-fi classic starring Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, Paul. Odd discussion topics include genetics, probing, and the acceptance nerd culture.
This is the kind of film we need right now. It is fun, nerdy, and hilarious! If you have not seen Paul it is worth a watch. It is a unique alien road trip story across the United States by two British sci-fi geeks featuring an incredible comedic cast. Names include Jane Lynch, David Koechner, Jason Bateman, and Kristen Wiig. Paul embraced nerd culture and helped bring it into the mainstream with other comedic properties like The Big Bang Theory during 2011. Matt and Mike both enjoyed their re-watch of this great film. They both award Paul 3.5 out of 5 Reels. It is currently streaming on HBO Max.
It is Mike’s pick for next week and he hunted down an award winning Amazon Original from the United Kingdom, Get Duked! The trailer looks very promising on this unique romp through the Scottish Highlands. Don’t forget to check out this week’s promo and movie giveaway Most Wanted written and directed by Daniel Roby and starring Josh Hartnett. Thanks for hanging out and listening to our little pod. We will chat at you next week!

Episode #188: The New Mutants
Wednesday Sep 16, 2020
Wednesday Sep 16, 2020
Happy hump day everyone! Today Matt and Mike continue cheating death and visit the movie theater to catch the last Fox Marvel film The New Mutants. Additional topics include sports ball, Siskel & Ebert, and the future of the X-Men franchise.
What is wrong with critics today? The New Mutants isn’t a masterpiece but it is in no way a terrible movie. Could it have been better, sure. It is a decent take on making the mutant/superhero genre into a horror film. There are still elements of your typical superhero film with big action sequences and CGI but it succeeds at it’s attempt to create a horror sub-genre. The acting is very good, the sets all take place in one location but are very different, and the story is decent. This is not a must see film in the theaters but it is definitely worth a watch when it drops on Hulu or Disney+ in the future. Mike and Matt both agree it earns 3 out of 5 Reels.
Next week is a little dry for new releases on streaming and in theaters. It is Matt’s pick and he chose to do a Legacy cast on the 2011 alien road trip comedy, Paul. It is currently streaming on HBO and HBO Max. Don’t forget to enter our movie giveaway contests, we have a couple going on with more in the near future! Thanks for listening and we will chat at you next week!

Episode #187: Tenet
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
Thank the maker! Matt and Mike Talent return to the theaters this week after a 5 month absence risking their lives and relationships to see Christoper Nolan’s latest epic Tenet. Bonus topics included more movie giveaways, Twilight (yes, that one), and the Saw franchise.
Christopher Nolan again tackles his favorite subject, time, but using a James Bond type character. Tenet is a great film that has issues, according to Matt. The shining star is all the practical effects especially when they crash a 747 into a building! The acting from John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kenneth Branagh was excellent but Robert Pattinson was on another level. The first hour of the film is very confusing and might turn viewers away. About half way through something happens that helps explain the whole film and it’s off to the races from then on. Mike Talent really enjoyed Tenet giving it 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt thought the film was mediocre and had issues but really enjoyed it. He awards the movie 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys will review a movie of some kind if Mike Talent can make up his mind. Maybe they will return to the theaters for the first Marvel (not MCU) horror film The New Mutants. Don’t forget to enter our movie giveaway contests, we have a couple going on with more in the near future! Thanks for listening and we will chat at you next week!

Episode #186: Bill & Ted Face the Music
Wednesday Sep 02, 2020
Wednesday Sep 02, 2020
Happy week happy pod! Today your host’s Mike Talent and Matt review a brand spanking new movie that they are shocked got made, Bill & Ted Face the Music. Hold onto your butts listeners this is a long pod! Extra topics include a farewell and thank you to Chadwick Boseman, box office numbers, and booze filled seltzers.
Have you been missing that thing we used to have last year, all the way back in 2019, what was it called, that’s right fun! Bill & Ted Face the Music is just plain old fun for fun’s sake. This film is full of characters, nostalgia, and time traveling. Is Bill & Ted Face the Music going to win all kinds of awards and make billions of dollars, probably not but it is a hilarious comedy with an OK story and great acting. It is definitely worth the trip to see it in the theater or rent it at home like we did. Matt was having a pretty rough day when he watched this film and it brightened his day a lot. He gives Bill & Ted Face the Music 4 out of 5 Reels. Mike Talent really enjoyed the film but he just could not get over the confusing and rough story. He awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys will hit the theaters for the first time since mid March. They are leery but are not going to miss the opening weekend of Christopher Nolan’s latest film Tenet. Don’t forget to enter our giveaway for a free copy of the independent film The Vanished starring Anne Heche and Thomas Jane. Thanks for listening and we will chat at you next week!

Episode #185: Tributary - Project Power
Wednesday Aug 26, 2020
Wednesday Aug 26, 2020
Happy Wednesday everyone! Today Mike and Matt sit down to chat about one of Netflix’s latest Original Films Project Power starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Non superhero related topics include Fortnite, movie theaters opening back up, and win a Blu-ray copy of The King of Staten Island.
Netflix has done it again, what a fun popcorn action flick! The acting was great, the sets are dark and gritty, and the CGI is the best of any Netflix Original Film. Jamie Foxx does a great job as Major, a man on a mission to find his daughter, but one of the best performances turned in was by relative unknown Dominique Fishback. A low profile TV actress, Dominique does an excellent job as a lost teenage drug dealer trying to find her way in the superhero powered New Orleans.
Mike Talent, not knowing what to expect, really loved this film! He gives it a high rating of 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt also enjoyed Project Power giving it an above average rating of 3.5 out of 5 Reels. If you have Netflix and some time to spare (who doesn’t right now) then this movie is perfect for you.
Next week we are holding back on going to the theaters, for now. The boys are spending $25 each to catch a brand new movie Bill & Ted Face the Music. For you youngsters out there the original two films are cult classics and the role Keanu Reeves was born to play! Don’t forget to enter our giveaway for a free Blu-Ray copy of The King of Staten Island. Thanks for listening and we will chat at you next week!

Episode #184: Legacy - Public Enemies
Wednesday Aug 19, 2020
Wednesday Aug 19, 2020
Welcome movie lovers! Today we dip into our fan requests and review the 2009 depression era gangster film starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, Public Enemies. Not gangster topics include YouTube, $0.15 movies at AMC, and we have a Blu-ray giveaway to enter!
This film is a perfect example of a great gangster film with one major issue, it’s long! Bale and Depp perfect the cat and mouse game with their historical representations of Melvin Purvis and John Dillinger. The costuming is excellent along with the sets and gun fights. The cars are absolutely stunning! They even use them properly with period accurate getaways and shootouts. The supporting cast is fantastic including the likes of Jason Clarke, Giovanni Ribisi, and Marion Cotillard, to name a few. If you have not seen this film yet you are missing out. Public Enemies is currently streaming on Netflix. Mysterious Mike gives the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt, ever the lenient one, gives the gangster shoot 'em up 4 out of 5 Reels.
Next week is Mike’s pick. He decided to continue our exploration of new Netflix Original films with Project Power starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Don’t forget to listen to the whole pod and enter our giveaway for a free Blu-Ray copy of The King of Staten Island. Thanks for listening and we will chat at you next week!

Episode #183: Tributary - An American Pickle
Wednesday Aug 12, 2020
Wednesday Aug 12, 2020
Another week and another podcast for your listening pleasure. Today Mike and Matt dip into yet another streaming service to watch the first HBO Max Original film An American Pickle starring Seth Rogen and Seth Rogen. Extra topics include PSL, portrait mode, and do we really need more streaming services?
An American Pickle is definitely a movie. It is not a good movie, it is not a terrible movie, it’s just a movie. The premise is hilarious with tones of the hit TV show Futurama and the slapstick goofiness of an Adam Sandler comedy but it just doesn’t deliver. In fact the movie gets down right mean and cruel towards the end. It is a dark comedy but sometimes the darkness is just upsetting and not funny. Is this the film to force your hand to subscribe to yet another streaming service? No, definitely not. If you have the time plus a subscription to HBO Max and want to watch Seth Rogen play against himself in what could have been a very funny film, then sure why not sit down and watch this one. Matt and Mike suggest you don’t. Mike Talent gives An American Pickle 2 out of 5 Reels. Matt getting back to normalcy gives it a smidge high score with 2.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week, as of right now, we plan on watching the Johnny Depp and Christian Bale cops and robbers biopic Public Enemies currently streaming on Netflix. Thanks for listening to our pod, hopefully you enjoyed it as much as we did. Chat at you next week!

Episode #182: Tributary - Extinction
Wednesday Aug 05, 2020
Wednesday Aug 05, 2020
Happy Wednesday everyone! Mysterious Mike Talent finally picked a film for review this week. Another Netflix Original and this one is a couple of years old. The SciFi thriller Extinction starring Michael Pena and Lizzy Caplan. Other topics include Four Peaks releases their Pumpkin Porter early, SpaceX splashdown, and what order to watch the Star Wars films.
This is the first time in a while the guys do not agree on a film. Mike really enjoyed Extinction, especially the story. Matt on the other hand thought the only thing worth while in this film is the huge slap in the face twist. The acting was subdued and nothing special. The computer generated imagery was awful, especially one scene towards the end of the movie. If you are not into SciFi and big Twilight Zone style twists you might want to pass on this film, if you ask Matt. Mike on the other hand thinks it is definitely worth a watch being only 90 minutes long and easily available on Netflix. He graciously awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt uncharacteristically with a lower rating gives Extinction 2 out of 5 Reels, barely.
Next week we plan on having a newer movie review and giveaway! We were lucky to be contacted by the studio that produced The King of Staten Island and they will be providing us with some giveaway copies. Make sure to listen to next weeks episode for your chance to win. Thanks for listening to our pod, hopefully you enjoyed it as much as we did. Chat at you next week!

Episode #181: Tributary - The Old Guard
Wednesday Jul 29, 2020
Wednesday Jul 29, 2020
Welcome faithful listeners! This week Mike and Matt reviewed a Netflix Original that is destroying the charts, The Old Guard. Not too far off topics include Aeon Flux, favorite Pixar Films, and are movie theaters ever coming back.
What a great surprise of a film! This one really came out of nowhere. The Old Guard is a fantasy action movie based around immortality and world history. The world building is excellent especially the juxtaposition of Charize Theron’s character Andy and KiKi Layne’s character Nile. The old versus the new shows you this unique world from two different perspectives helping flesh it out. Mysterious Mike really enjoyed The Old Guard giving it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt thought the film was incredible and can not wait for the inevitable sequel awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels.
We hope the guys will be talking about a movie next week. Mysterious Mike Talent did not do his homework. Hopefully, he will even though it is late and we will get something watched and reviewed for you. Thanks for listening to our pod, hopefully you enjoyed it as much as we did. Chat at you next week!

Episode #180: Legacy - Guns Akimbo
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Welcome faithful listeners, yes it’s hump day but it’s also NEW PODCAST DAY! Today Matt and Mike kick back and chat about lots of things but mostly Guns Akimbo starring Samara Weaving and Daniel Radcliffe. Extra topics include the Fast and Furious franchise, Tenet on indefinite hold, and Universal VS AMC Theaters.
Fair warning, this film is not for everyone. It is a fun fast paced action comedy with lots of video game elements and millennial tidbits that has several parts that are just flat out bad. There are great lines and scenes too that are so good they will catch you by surprise. Weaving is excellent in the film in a character that should have been written better. Radcliffe does a great job leading the film as a nerdy video game programmer turned action celebrity. Ned Dennehy, almost unrecognizable, brings the sadistic tech savvy villain Riktor to life in a very almost disturbing way. Mysterious Mike really enjoyed Guns Akimbo giving it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt thought the film was fun and action packed but was just average awarding it 3 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys chat about more random topics they enjoy and you probably don’t but hopefully focus on a new Netflix film The Old Guard starring Charlize Theron. Thanks for listening to our pod, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Chat at you next week!

Episode #179: Tributary - Palm Springs
Wednesday Jul 15, 2020
Wednesday Jul 15, 2020
Hi everybody! Welcome to the Reel Film Nerds Podcast Episode 179, wow really? That’s a lot of talking right there! Today your host’s not talented Matt and Mysterious Mike Talent review and discuss the brand new Hulu Original Film Palm Springs. Not time loop related topics include AIMS testing, Top Gun: Maverick, and the infamous Groundhog Day.
Palm Springs is a really fun and poignant comedy that might hit a little too close to home during our current pandemic. This movie takes the infinite time loop genre and adds a second person to the mix. Instead of one person experiencing the day alone like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day we get Nyles, played by Andy Samberg, and Sarah, played by Cristin Milioti, going through the single day loop together. This premise leads to extreme antics, hatred, and even romance. Palm Springs is a really fun movie that is not a waste of an hour and a half. Everyone needs a good laugh and this film is full of them. Mike Talent, always the cynic, gives the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt liked it just a smidge more doling out 3.5 out of 5 Reels for the desert rom-com.
Next week is Mike’s pick and he has chosen a movie you probably did not even know existed. Guns Akimbo starring Samara Weaving and Daniel Radcliffe. The New Zealand action comedy thriller is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Thanks for listening to our pod, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Chat at you next week!

Episode #178: Tributary - 7500
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Welcome to another incredible Reel Film Nerds podcast about a movie that is not in a theater, again. Today the boys review an Amazon Original film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 7500. Bonus topics for this episode include Kirby T’s, Uber Eats, and piloting an airplane.
Wow what a movie out of left field! Seriously no one saw this coming including Mike and he picked it! 7500 is a really great film taking place almost entirely in a jumbo jet’s hijacked cockpit. It is very reminiscent of a one man play except with a few more actors. Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes this film. He carries it almost completely on his own. The story is not perfect but it has twists and turns always keeping you guessing. Mike and Matt both really enjoyed 7500 but like most of the time Matt is more giving on his rating. He awards the airplane hijacking thriller 4 out of 5 Reels. Mike is close with a competitive 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
Are you looking for another comedy to watch to help lift your spirits that is inspired by Groundhog Day? Yes? So are we! That's why next week we watch the Hulu Original Film Palm Springs starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. Thanks for listening to our latest podcast, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Episode #177: Tributary - Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
Thursday Jul 02, 2020
Thursday Jul 02, 2020
Yep we slacked off a bit this week but only by a day. Mike Talent was busy with family and his new born and well Matt is just Matt. We do have a new pod for you and surprise surprise it's another Netflix comedy, Will Ferrell and Rachael McAdams latest Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Off topics today include RFN t-shirts, favorite breweries, and the infamous ASU vs U of A rivalry.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is a fun comedic romp on a topic not many Americans know about. Ferrell and McAdams are fantastic in the film portraying the obtuse musical duo. The backdrops are breathtaking, especially the shots of Iceland. The story is goofy and fun especially the addition of a Russian villain played by Dan Stevens. Eurovision is definitely worth taking time out of your day to watch. It is not Will Ferrell’s best work but it is not his worst either. Mike Talent really enjoyed the movie giving it an above average score of 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt also enjoyed the song contest parody but not as much but he is glad to see Ferrell climb out of his rut. He gives the movie 2.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys keep rolling with streaming films finally getting away from Netflix with the Amazon Original 7500 starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Thanks for listening to our latest podcast, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Chat at you next week!

Episode #176: Tributary - The Lovebirds
Wednesday Jun 24, 2020
Wednesday Jun 24, 2020
Let the new streaming film reviews continue! Today your movie gurus discuss a new Netflix rom com murder mystery, wow talk about an interesting genre! The Lovebirds starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. Extracurricular topics include inflation, movie trailers revealing too much, and the film Independence Day.
The Lovebirds is a fun witty movie with some great comedic parts throughout the film. There are also a handful of scenes where it falls short or just flat out does not need to be in the movie. Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani have excellent chemistry especially when they are arguing nonsense. Those are some of Matt’s favorite LOL scenes and he doesn’t LOL ever. It was a nice change of pace having the film based in New Orleans instead of New York City or LA like typical films of today. The writers also paid homage to previous great films like Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut and the spy rom com Date Night.
Is this film going to win a ton of awards and set records, nope. It is a fun exciting LOL movie that is well worth a watch if you have Netflix. Mike gives The Lovebirds an OK rating with 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt, always the more lenient reviewer, awards the film an average score of 3 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys keep the new streaming comedies going with a brand new Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga premiering on Netflix Friday June 26, 2020. Thanks for listening to our latest podcast, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Chat at you next week!

Episode #175: Tributary - Artemis Fowl
Wednesday Jun 17, 2020
Wednesday Jun 17, 2020
Check it out everyone, we finally got a new film to watch! Thanks to Disney not waiting for movie theaters to open, you can now catch Artemis Fowl (originally slated for theaters) on their streaming platform Disney Plus. Extracurricular topics today include National Treasure, COVID-19 movie delays, and Dolby Atmos.
Based on the popular books series, Artemis Fowl follows the son of a criminal mastermind, with the same name, on a quest to rescue his father while discovering a second world exists with fairies, trolls, and more. To call Artemis Fowl mediocre would be high praise. This is a rough film that suffers from Matt’s #1 complaint, the story or lack thereof. This world is beautiful, fun, and interesting but the story doesn't live up to it’s characters or environment.
Clearly the story must be great in the books since they are a world phenomenon but the filmmakers dropped the ball on their translation to the big screen. The acting was rough but we aren’t going to slam the lead, it is literally his first film ever. The sets are gorgeous and the digital effects are also well done. Both your hosts agree, this is not a must see film. It is a hard pass unless you read the books then maybe. We are sorry to report Mike and Matt are back to agreeing everyone, yes again, graciously awarding Artemis Fowl 2 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys keep the new streaming films rolling with another movie that was supposed to hit the theaters this year. Currently streaming on Netflix, The Lovebirds starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. Thanks for listening to our latest podcast, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Episode #174: Legacy - Back to the Future Part III
Wednesday Jun 10, 2020
Wednesday Jun 10, 2020
Our summer retrospective on the Back to the Future franchise comes to a close today with Back to the Future Part III written and directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg. Topics not related to time travel include what happened to fun movies, drinking, and Mike and Matt are old.
Back to the Future Part III is a great film arguably at least as great as the original. Doc and Marty are back for another adventure in time but instead of going to 2015 or 1955 Marty attempts to rescue Doc from 1885 before Mad Dog Tannen snuffs him out. What really sets this film apart from the previous film, other than being a fun western, is it’s a completely new story. The movie does not have large portions of the film before it to rely on. It is a fun comedic take on a western that also pays homage to the genre. Back to the Future Part III is a must see especially if you are a fan of the first two films. Mike Talent awards the film a surprising perfect score with 5 out of 5 Reels! Matt also really loves this movie but still thinks the original is a better watch. He gives Back to the Future Part III 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys will review a new film that was supposed to be dropping in theaters this summer but well you know the apocalypse got in the way. One of Disney+’s first straight to streaming films Artemis Fowl starring Ferdia Shaw and Colin Farrell. Thanks for checking our little review show. Chat at you next week finally with a new movie!

Episode #173: Legacy - Back to the Future Part II
Wednesday Jun 03, 2020
Wednesday Jun 03, 2020
Our summer retrospective on the Back to the Future franchise continues today with Back to the Future Part II starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. No beating around the DeLorean here, we really go off topic a ton in today’s podcast. Matt and Mike talk about space, movie remakes, and the chaos of rioting in the streets on top of COVID-19.
Back to the Future Part II is a really fun film that takes place in the future, well technically the past now, and tries to explain some of the paradoxes and problems if time travel was possible. Altering history even a little bit can drastically change the world you have come to know and love. It is fun watching flying cars, flying skateboards, and the occasional flying punch. Did we mention Michael J. Fox plays multiple characters in this film, not just old and young Marty McFly? Back to the Future Part II is a really fun creative film but it relies on the original film a tad much. The alternate timeline was not a favorite of Matt’s especially how much time the movie spent in it. The guys are back to not agreeing on ratings, well this week. I know what you are thinking Mike is a harsh movie goer but guess what it’s Matt this week! Mike awards Back to the Future Part II 4.5 out of 5 Reels while Matt on the other hand only gives the time travel classic 4 out of 5 Reels.
Don’t forget if you have not seen any of the Back to the Future franchise films they are all available to stream on Netflix this instant. Next week the guys close out their look back at the time traveling trilogy with the franchises final film Back to the Future Part III. Thanks for checking our little review show. Chat at you next week about time traveling to the 1800’s.

Episode #172: Legacy - Back to the Future
Wednesday May 27, 2020
Wednesday May 27, 2020
Merry Wednesday everyone! Have you ever wanted to go back in time? Ya Matt wishes he could every waking moment of his existence too. Today we chat about an incredible, fun, and hilarious 1980's classic Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. Off topics include Southpark, marketing products in film, and bullying.
What can we say Back to the Future is one of the best films ever created. The acting is amazing, the story is thought provoking and fun, and the car oh man the iconic 1982 DeLorean is one of the greatest props ever created. This movie hits all the right spots and never misses a beat. The chemistry between Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd is magical! So magical that it has inspired the creation of multiple pop culture hits such as Rick and Morty. Alan Silvestri’s soundtrack is pure perfection, especially the main title. Back to the Future is a true cinematic masterpiece. Matt and Mike both love this film with a passion, if you can’t tell, and they award it a perfect score of 5 out of 5 Reels!
If you have not seen Back to the Future we implore you to fire up Netflix this instant and watch it then come back next week when we chat about it’s sequel Back to the Future Part II and the week after with the trilogies conclusion Back to the Future Part III. Yep we committed to it. The guys are doing a three part Back to the Future Summer Retrospective. Thanks for checking our little review show. Chat at you next week about more time travel.

Episode #171: Tributary - Extraction
Wednesday May 20, 2020
Wednesday May 20, 2020
Hello fellow movie buffs and listeners both new and old. Is anyone else really missing movie theaters yet? Mike and Matt are especially some of the new releases we were promised. Fear not for today’s Reel Film Nerds Podcast Matt picked a brand spanking new Netflix Original starring Chris Hemsworth, Extraction. Off topics today include CEO salaries, the Rambo franchise, and a lengthy discussion at the end of the pod about how Netflix makes money.
Extraction is a decent action film with a story that is very familiar. It is not a bad story; it has just been done over and over again in multiple different variations but better. The acting throughout the film was great. Nothing special but it was not bad either. One of the shining stars of the film is it’s location. Isn’t it nice to see Hollywood expand their filming locations outside of LA, New York, London, and Atlanta? Extraction is not a must watch for most people but you won’t be disappointed if you do. The action is very good so if you are an action buff it is well worth your time. Hopefully the guys are finally getting back on track with their opinions. Mysterious Mike gives Extraction 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt who is always a bit kinder than Mike gives the kidnap action romp 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
Mike is feeling a bit down and out being locked up at home with a brand new baby all the time. He really wants to laugh and have a good time. For next week he picked a classic that is currently streaming on Netflix, Back to the Future! We might even do a Back to the Future retrospective over the next three podcasts. What do you think? Email us and let us know if you want to hear us talk about one of the best film franchises in history. Thanks for checking our little review show. Chat at you next week.

Episode #170: Legacy - American Pie
Wednesday May 13, 2020
Wednesday May 13, 2020
Congratulations Class of 2020! This week Mike and Matt pay their respects to all the new graduates by reviewing a film that was near and dear to them when they graduated high school. 1999’s raunchy dessert driven comedy American Pie starring Jason Biggs, Shannon Elizabeth, and Eugene Levy. Unique topics today include concerts coming back, PC culture, and high school shenanigans.
Alright no messing around let’s just get straight to it, Matt and Mike love this movie. It truly has a special spot in their hearts and it definitely affects their ratings. American Pie is a fun coming of age story with decent acting, relatable characters, and a great 90’s soundtrack. It is not politically correct especially by today’s standards and some of the gags are flat out felonies now. Foreign exchange students, bathroom pranks, and alcohol fueled parties, what’s not to like in this movie? Is this an award winning thought provoking film, no. It is a ton of fun especially to those of us who were in high school during the late 90’s. If you enjoy films by National Lampoon or 80’s era high school comedies you will enjoy American Pie. Matt and Mike are back at it again. At least we had one week where they did not agree on a rating. The boys both give American Pie 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Matt picked the new Thor I mean Chris Hemsworth film currently streaming on Netflix titled Extraction. Why not sit down and watch it with us this week and send in your thoughts on the action packed thriller. Maybe we will even read your comments on the pod. Thanks for checking our little review and booze show. Why not do us one more favor and help spread the love by telling your friends and family to listen too! Chat at you next week.

Episode #169: Legacy - Bringing Out the Dead
Wednesday May 06, 2020
Wednesday May 06, 2020
Happy National hangover from Cinco day!!! Look we didn’t open this review with the end of the world maybe things are starting to turn around. Today Mike and Matt discuss a little known Martin Scorsese film Bringing Out the Dead starring Nicholas Cage. Not related topics include SGN, Cinco de Drinko, and Ghost Rider.
Bringing Out the Dead is not one of Scorsese’s best films but it is definitely not his worst either. It is a very dark and depressing story taking place over three nights as a paramedic descends into madness while being haunted by the ghosts of the people he could not save. The three different nights feel extremely different thanks to Cage’s coworkers he tours New York City with each night. One is optimistic, one is maniacal, and one is just thinking about dinner. The film production and the acting from the star studded cast is incredible. The shots are unique and beautiful each telling a different story. This is a charismatic, harrowing, and dark film that is not for everyone especially right now with the COVID-19 quarantine still going on. For the first time in five weeks Matt and Mike have different ratings! Mike was not a fan of this movie but respects it. He gives Bringing Out the Dead 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt likes this film that is why he suggested it. It is not an incredible film for him but it is enjoyable and a unique story. He gives it 4 out of 5 Reels.
Next week it’s Mike’s pick and he chose wisely! In honor of the Class of 2020 Matt and Mike are going to review a film that is near and dear to their hearts when they graduated high school American Pie. Be prepared it will probably be a long and emotional podcast for your two hosts. American Pie is currently streaming on HBO. Why not sit down this week and watch it then email us your thoughts on the film. We will even read them on the pod! Thanks for checking our little review and booze show. Why not do us one more favor and help spread the love by telling your friends and family to listen too! Chat at you next week.

Episode #168: Tributary - Code 8
Wednesday Apr 29, 2020
Wednesday Apr 29, 2020
Welcome kiddos! Are you sick of watching TV, movies, and listening to the Reel Film Nerds podcast yet? No? Great, neither are we so here is a fresh one for your ear holes. Today Mike Talent and Matt checked out an independent Sci-Fi film that Netflix purchased recently Code 8. Not Code 8 topics include Zoom Meetings, the joys of breeding, and Parks and Recreation.
Code 8 is a really great fun action packed Sci-Fi movie. It is perfect right now to help keep your mind off being stuck inside. It takes place in an alternate universe where a percentage of the population basically has superpowers. Oh and there are these sick robots that were created to help police the troublemaker supers. The story and the special effects are the absolute best part of this film. It is astonishing what they were able to do on an independent budget. The acting well it's a little rough. It is not awful by any means it just could have been better. Mike and Matt really enjoyed this film and do suggest you sit down and watch it. Regretfully though they keep landing on the same rating!! This week makes 5 reviews in a row where they agreed, so boring! They both give Code 8 a respectable 3 out of 5 Reels.
Next week is Matt’s pick and boy did he grab a great watch. It is a film by a little director you might have heard of Martin Scorsese. The film though is one you might not have heard of. It is from 1999 titled Bringing Out the Dead. If you have Amazon Prime it is currently streaming on Prime Video for free. Why not sit down this week and watch it then email us your thoughts on the film. We will even read them on the pod! Thanks for checking our little review and booze show. Episode #167: The Rhythm Section
Wednesday Apr 22, 2020
Wednesday Apr 22, 2020
Is it just us or are the days starting to really blend together? Well at least today is going to be different, we have a brand spanking new episode of the Reel Film Nerds podcast for you! In this pod Mike and Matt talk revenge, spies, and the Green Lantern? when they review The Rhythm Section starring Blake Lively and Jude Law. Way off topics include Shudder, buying a new TV, and washing dishes.
The Rhythm Section is a great film with lots of twists and turns and excellent acting. Blake Lively especially excels at the many different ways her character is portrayed from girl next door to junkie to badass assassin. Jude Law also does an excellent job being the strong willed and almost hated former spy training Lively’s character and taking advantage of her naivety. One incredible scene of the film really sticks out to your two hosts, a car chase. It is your typical car chase but the way it was shot puts you in the passenger seat for the whole chase. There are no overhead shots or scene setting exteriors, just a fun ride with a scared Lively trying to escape. Matt and Mike are on a roll! Again they agree on a rating both awarding The Rhythm Section 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
Congratulations to our winner’s and enjoy your copy of The Rhythm Section while practicing social distancing. Special thanks goes out to Paramount Pictures for supplying us with digital codes to share with you our loyal listeners. For everyone who entered our contest thank you for your support. Next week Mike and Matt talk about a new Netflix Original Sci-Fi film Code 8. Thanks for downloading our pod and help spread the love by telling your friends and family to listen too!
