Episode #311: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Wednesday Feb 22, 2023
Wednesday Feb 22, 2023
It’s here everyone! Our first Marvel Cinematic Universe film of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Man Marvel and Disney are just cranking these things out aren’t they? Additional topics today include where is Luis, MCU villains, and Mike’s likes it sloppy.
Going against the critics and keyboard warriors Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is not a horrible film. It is not amazing either like we have come to expect from the MCU. Ant-Man 3 is a fun blockbuster with a ton of faults. The introduction of Kang played by Jonathan Majors is probably the best part of the film. He is really going to be a great addition and villain for the MCU. The worst part of the film is that Disney did M.O.D.O.K. dirty! If you are a fan of M.O.D.O.K. you are going to hate him in this film. Also this whole dang movie is nothing but a CGI fest. Some of it is really great and some of it is really terrible. Is Ant-Man 3 worth a watch, yes but only if you like the MCU, blockbusters, or Paul Rudd. Mike and Matt agree Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania earns a palatable 2.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Ma, Matt, and Mike head to the theaters to watch a very interesting looking film loosely based on real life Cocaine Bear directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Ray Liota. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #310: Knock at the Cabin
Wednesday Feb 15, 2023
Wednesday Feb 15, 2023
Happy Valentine’s Day hangover, may your wallets be empty and your hearts be full of love. Today for Reel Film Nerds Episode 310 the guys review Knock at the Cabin while celebrating their 5 year anniversary! Topics today include Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode 1, what a twist, and should we review RRR.
Apocalypse stories are a dime a dozen by movie standards. Knock at the Cabin is another apocalypse story but it doesn’t blatantly show you what’s going on outside the cabin. It hints at it and shows you news reports. Knock at the Cabin is a lot more like a one room play focusing on acting and character development and it does great. Besides the incredible acting by the entire cast especially Kristen Cui and Dave Bautista the cinematography is a master class. It is just incredible. Shot entirely on film using tight shots, wide shots, etc. it really elevates this film.
Mike liked Knock at the Cabin but didn’t love it. He awards the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt and Ma Hinshaw on the other hand loved it. They both give the film 4 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Mike, Matt, and Ma head to the theaters to watch our first MCU film of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania starring Paul Rudd and Jonathan Majors. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #309: The Fabelmans
Wednesday Feb 08, 2023
Wednesday Feb 08, 2023
Happy Wednesday movie lovers. For this week’s Reel Film Nerds podcast we catch up on a 2023 Best Picture nominee The Fabelmans written and directed by Steven Spielberg. Extra topics include raw talent, breaking news, and a new movie giveaway.
This is a very personal story that took many years for Steven Spielberg to write and bring to film. The Fabelmans is very closely based on Spielberg's upbringing in Arizona and his love of creating films. The Fabelmans is a lot deeper than that. It is also about family, resentment, lying, and truth. The film was beautifully shot and written, to be expected from Spielberg, but it also was acted extremely well. Michelle Williams and Gabriel LaBelle are incredible but Paul Dano and even Seth Rogen put on incredible displays too. The Fabelmans is a must watch film if you love movies. Is it the Best Picture winner, we will find out in a few weeks. Matt gives the film 4 out of 5 Reels while Mike with an almost perfect score rates it 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Mike and Matt head to the theaters to check out the latest M. Night Shyamalan flick, Knock at the Cabin starring Dave Bautista. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #308: Tributary - The Pale Blue Eye
Wednesday Feb 01, 2023
Wednesday Feb 01, 2023
Welcome to February everyone. This year is just rocketing by isn’t it? This week Mike and Matt sit down to chat about the Netflix Original The Pale Blue Eye starring Christian Bale and Harry Melling. Not murder mystery topics include Australia, cursive, and anxious Mike.
If you enjoy murder mysteries, period films, or amazing acting then The Pale Blue Eye is a great film for you. For the rest of you listeners you can stop reading now. A mysterious hanging of a West Point cadet in 1830 prompts the school’s director to recruit a local detective to investigate the mysterious suicide. The costumes are amazing, the sets are beautiful, and the color palette is perfect. Christian Bale never disappoints either. He is an incredible actor and one of the best things about this film. Harry Melling portrays a young Edgar Allen Poe nearly stealing the show from Bale.
Matt and Mike differ greatly on this film. Mike really enjoyed The Pale Blue Eye. He loved almost every aspect of it, awarding the film 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt on the other hand really found the story boring and way too long. He only awards it 2 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Mike and Matt play catch up by reviewing one of the 2023 Oscar Nominated Best Picture films The Fabelmans written and directed by Steven Spielberg. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #307: A Man Called Otto
Wednesday Jan 25, 2023
Wednesday Jan 25, 2023
Guess what it’s podcast time with Matt and Mike AKA the Reel Film Nerds. For episode 307 the guys chat about Tom Hanks’ latest film A Man Called Otto. Not grumpy old man topics include dry January, another awesome giveaway, and homeowners associations.
This is not intentional but so far we are at 50% sad movie reviews for 2023. We swear we are not picking sad films on purpose, guess it’s just that time of year. A Man Called Otto is a really great film but gosh it’s really depressing for the bulk of the movie. It has a really nice thoughtful third act that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy but holy crap there is some darkness to work through first. This is a difficult film to discuss without spoiling major plot points so we won’t. The acting is very good as expected from Tom Hanks but Mariana Treviño the counterbalance to the grumpy old man, was equally amazing.
Should you rush out and watch A Man Called Otto, maybe. The movie theaters would love your business and it’s Tom Hanks dang it. Mike and Matt both really enjoyed the film but Matt liked it a little bit more, awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels. Mike gives A Man Called Otto a respectable 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week we stay home and sit on our couches catching Christian Bale’s latest Netflix Original The Pale Blue Eye. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #306: M3GAN
Wednesday Jan 18, 2023
Wednesday Jan 18, 2023
Happy hump day everyone! For Reel Film Nerds Episode 306 we chat about our first horror movie of 2023 M3GAN. Additional topics include the TV show Girls, donkeys, and what is elevated horror.
Does this film really qualify as a horror movie or is it a thriller? Matt and Mike think M3GAN leans more towards psychological thriller than a horror flick. The things you don’t see or experience are just as scary as the things the film does show you. M3GAN, the AI doll, is basically a mix of Terminator and Chucky with a sprinkle of everyone’s favorite Alexa device thrown in for good measure. This film is a story that has been done over and over again just not quite like this. One of the best questions M3GAN raises is a kid's dependency on their guardian and should an AI be that guardian? There are some really interesting scenes that do make this film worth a watch. Just seeing the doll M3GAN do her thing and how well she does it is a feat in its own right. They really nailed it visually and audibly. Matt and Mike differ a bit on M3GAN. Mike, as expected, loved the movie, awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt thought the film was just average and had been done before. He awards it 3 out 5 Reels.
Next week Mike and Matt head to the theaters this week to watch Tom Hanks try to play a grumpy man in A Man Called Otto. Come on Tom, we know you are a nice guy. We will try to believe you anyway. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #305: The Banshees of Inisherin
Wednesday Jan 11, 2023
Wednesday Jan 11, 2023
Welcome everyone to Reel Film Nerds podcast 305. Today Mike and Matt review a film that is lighting up the awards scene, The Banshees of Inisherin starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Off topics include kayaking, Star Tours, and our first giveaway of 2023!
For the second podcast of the year your hosts already don’t agree, that is a first! The Banshees of Inisherin is not a film for everyone. It is sad, dark, depressing, and humorous. It is your typical art house or independent type film. The acting is incredible, the sets are beautiful, and the story is very thought provoking, well to one of your hosts. There are ways you can read into the film, think about what it means, and how it pertains to your life or it might just come off really weird to you. Can you guess which host went what way? Our ratings will tell you.
Mike Talent was not a fan of The Banshees of Inisherin. He thought it was just weird and boring, awarding it 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt really liked it and read into it quite a bit especially how it pertains to his own life. He awards the film 4 out of 5 Reels.
Shocked? Yeah we are too. Mike is usually the hardcore film guy getting a ton out of smaller indie films. Not this time, I wonder if Matt is maturing? Nah there were a ton of f-bombs in this one.
Next week Mike and Matt head to the theaters to catch their first horror film of the year, M3GAN (2023) starring Allison Williams and Violet McGraw. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #304: Babylon (2022)
Wednesday Jan 04, 2023
Wednesday Jan 04, 2023
Merry 2023 everyone! Matt and Mike hope you got everything you wanted for Christmas and are not still suffering from a New Year’s hangover. For the first pod of 2023 the guys chat about Babylon (2022) starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. Extra special topics include Flea, our Best Movies of 2022, and gifts.
Babylon (2022) is a great movie for some people. It is very long but well acted, shot, with amazing sets and beautiful wardrobes. Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt do amazing jobs but relative newcomer Diego Calva steals the screen on many occasions. Babylon (2022) is a film for people who love movies and Hollywood. It tells multiple tales during the late 1920’s to 1930’s when Hollywood is transitioning into movies with sound. The biggest negative to Babylon (2022) is the length. It is over three hours long but luckily it doesn’t feel that long. Maybe skip the soda if you go watch this one in the theaters. Honestly it should be doing a hell of a lot better in the box office. Your hosts start the year off in agreement by awarding the film 4 out of 5 Reels.
Next week your hosts prepare for the upcoming awards season with a little film that dropped in November but is getting lots of Oscar buzz, The Banshees of Inisherin starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Thanks for listening everyone and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #303: Avatar: The Way of Water
Wednesday Dec 21, 2022
Wednesday Dec 21, 2022
Merry almost Christmas everyone. Just a few more days and you can open a ton of presents and enjoy that sweet holiday brew. Enough about that jazz, let's talk about blue people. This week Mike and Matt hit the theaters to check out James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel 13 years in the making. Bonus topics include Matt is sick (more than usual), box office numbers, and our last pod of 2022.
I am happy to report everyone, James Cameron did it again, kind of. Avatar: The Way of Water is a true technical masterpiece. It's beautiful, the world building is incredible, and the acting is very good. The biggest issue this film has and it’s a big one, is the story. It is basically the exact same as the 2009 original, heck even the villain is the exact same. Come on James you really should have done better than this. On top of the lackluster story this movie is long and it feels long clocking in at over 3 hours.
Now don’t let anything above deter you from going out and seeing Avatar: The Way of Water in the theater. Movie theaters were built for films like this. Just make sure you hit the bathroom up before you head into the theater. Matt awards Avatar: The Way of Water a shocking 4 out of 5 Reels. Maybe he was just feeling generous for Christmas. Mike Talent on the other hand awards the film 2.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the boys are going to spend time with their families doing the holiday thing. They will return in the new year with another long 3 hour plus movie that just hit the theaters, Babylon (2022) starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Olivia Wilde. Thanks for listening everyone and we will chat with you in 2023!

Episode #302: Violent Night
Wednesday Dec 14, 2022
Wednesday Dec 14, 2022
Howdy listeners and welcome back to our little movie review pod. For this week’s review we continue chatting about new Christmas films with Violent Night starring David Harbour and John Leguizamo. Not a murdering Santa Claus topics include The Blair Witch Project, our 300th Episode Blu-ray winner announced, and lots of podcast problems.
Can you remember a recent year where we got some fun great Christmas movies back to back? This year it happened and Matt and Mike are really enjoying it. Let’s just come out with it, Violent Night is awesome! It is basically Die Hard and Home Alone mashed together with some Christmas Vacation throw in for good measure. Violent Night is very well violent! So much so it’s comical much like video game violence. This film is also heart felt with some real Christmas feels in it too. David Harbour does a great job as Santa murdering lots and lots of people in fun interesting ways. Our villain played by John Leguizamo also did a fantastic job of being loathed.
Mike and Matt both agree Violent Night is a must see film especially if you are into action movies. They both award the film 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
For next week’s review the guys head back to the theater but not to catch another Christmas movie. This is a film 13 years in the making so we have to let you know if it’s any good, Avatar: The Way of Water. Thanks for listening everyone and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #301: Tributary - Spirited
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
Wednesday Dec 07, 2022
Welcome to December everyone! Today Mike and Matt hit the ground running for Christmas with the Apple TV Original Spirited starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. Extra topics include MCU Phases, family traditions, and musicals.
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a classic story that’s been told in many different mediums and in many different languages throughout the years. Spirited is inspired by Dickens’ story but it is really its own story. Spirited is a fun Christmas film with big sets, giant dance numbers, and loads of comedic talent. Ferrell and Reynolds were amazing together but Octavia Spencer was the breakout star. Her character and portrayal were just fantastic. Is Spirited for everyone, no especially not for Matt. It is more adult themed so young kids are out too. If you are looking for a fun new Christmas movie to share with most of the family, Spirited is worth your time. Mike awards the film 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt on the other hand can’t stand musicals, and some of the acting wasn’t so great, but he did love the story. He gives Spirited 2.5 out of 5 Reels.
For next week’s review Mike picked a film that just hit the theaters, Violent Night starring David Harbour. An R rated action Santa Claus film is very different from this week's film. Maybe Matt will finally get into the Christmas spirit. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #300: Legacy - 300
Wednesday Nov 30, 2022
Wednesday Nov 30, 2022
We did it! I don’t know how but we did it. The Reel Film Nerds Podcast hit 300 episodes! Of course we are nerds so we are reviewing a classic 300 episode film, 300 directed by Zack Snyder and starring Gerard Butler and Lena Headey. Bonus topics today include Andor is incredible, DCEU VS MCU, and an incredible giveaway to say thank you to our fans.
What is not to love about 300? It is an incredible stylized film based on a graphic novel that is inspired by actual historical events. Gerard Butler and Lena Headey are just absolutely perfect in this film. The supporting cast does an amazing job too, especially Michael Fassbender. The cinematography is amazing. The lighting, color palette, and its dramatic style really make 300 a feast for the eyes. If you have not seen 300 you must watch it right away. Mike with a perfect rating gives the Greek war movie 5 out of 5 Reels. Matt dropping his rating down a bit because the CGI didn’t age well gives 300 4 out of 5 Reels.
Next week it's Matt’s pick and he is kicking off December with a Christmas musical. Spirited starring two of the biggest names in comedy Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #299: Tributary - All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
Wednesday Nov 23, 2022
Wednesday Nov 23, 2022
Happy Thanksgiving eve everyone! Mike and Matt hope you have a wonderful holiday, eat lots of tasty food, and enjoy some movies with your family. For today’s 299th episode we chat about the Netflix Original All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). Additional topics include 1917, propaganda, and Matt needs some sleep.
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) is an incredible story based around true events that took place over 100 years ago. The novel was such a huge hit in 1929 that they made it into a film the next year. The Netflix Original adaptation is an absolute visual feast. Not to dismiss the two other movie versions but with our current technology and the actor’s deep ties to their country and culture, this is the best visual telling of this story to date.
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) is a must see film. The acting, sets, costumes, and cinematography are all at the peak of their game. Yes it is a gruesome gory film and that is the point. The story is being told in such a brutal way that the reader or viewer doesn’t think war is a good idea. The biggest let down of this film is that it is not easily available in the theaters. This movie is made to be seen on the big screen. Mike and Matt both agree All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) is a must see film both awarding it 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Mike and Matt celebrate their 300th Episode of the podcast by reviewing the 2006 classic 300! They are funny guys huh? Just a tip if you read this far they are giving away a special Blu-ray boxed set so make sure to tune in and figure out how you can win. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #298: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Wednesday Nov 16, 2022
Wednesday Nov 16, 2022
Welcome everyone to our last Marvel Cinematic Universe film review of 2022. Today Matt and Mike chat about Black Panther: Wakanda Forever starring Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, and Tenoch Huerta. Bonus topics include Deadpool 3, death, and comic representations.
Phase 4 was one of the most difficult MCU Phases to date. TV shows were introduced, the pandemic hit, and internet trolls went to town on Disney. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a great ending to Phase 4. It is not the strongest film of the phase but it is towards the top. The acting was very good, especially from Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright.
It is tough to say goodbye to Chadwick Boseman and his portrayal of Black Panther but director and writer Ryan Coogler did an excellent job. Is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as good as the original, no, but it is still a great film especially with the introduction of Namor and his hidden society into the MCU.
Matt and Mike both agree this is a must see film in the theaters. Movies like these with huge set pieces, incredible CGI, and larger than life characters are made for movie theaters. Matt awards Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Mike really enjoyed the film too, especially the water society and characters awarding the film a respectable 3 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Mike and Matt hit the ol’ Netflix to check out a retelling of an incredible WWI story All Quiet on the Western Front. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #297: Tributary - Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
The election is over, for now, thank you Lord for no more political ads! Ok let's get to it, welcome to the Reel Film Nerds podcast! Today Mike and Matt chat about a fun unique film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story currently streaming on Roku. Additional weird topics include Rammstein, a new giveaway, and Machete.
Weird Al is an artist that is near and dear to your two hosts' hearts. They grew up listening to his music and enjoying his shows and films. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is exactly what we need right now as a society. A fun, goofy, yet strange biopic that stretches the truth just a smidge. Daniel Radcliffe and Evan Rachel Wood act the crap out of this film, seriously. They do such a great job you forget they are acting. There are a ton of laugh out loud moments but sometimes the strangeness of the film takes away from the humor. Both Matt and Mike agree Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is a must see and laugh film. Mike really enjoyed this film awarding it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt also enjoyed Weird: The Al Yankovic Story but it was a bit too strange for him on the occasion. He awards the movie 3 out of 5 Reels.
For next week's review we hit the theaters to check out the last Marvel Cinematic Universe of 2022 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #296: Black Adam
Wednesday Nov 02, 2022
Wednesday Nov 02, 2022
Happy turkey month everyone! For today’s pod we play a bit of catch up with DC’s Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson and Pierce Brosnan. Not antihero topics include pumpkin foods, another incredible giveaway, and Halloween Horror Night mistakes.
The Rock does it again. Who knew Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock would be a great fit for an antihero? In Black Adam Johnson does a great job of well not being Dwayne Johnson. He is not his typical sarcastic humorous self. He is very dialed down, almost a cool quiet even and boy does he do a great job. The real bell of the ball though is Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate. A fairly obscure DC character with some incredible powers. Overall Black Adam is an action packed feast for your eyes with a decent story and mostly great acting.
Matt and Mike both agree this film deserves to be viewed on the big screen. Let’s just hope Black Adam helps lead the DC Universe into a more coherent direction and they can make some great films sooner than later. Mike not knowing what to expect really liked Black Adam awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels. Matt also had a great time but wanted a bit more out of the story. He gives the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
For next week's review we hit a fairly obscure streaming service the Roku Channel to check out Weird: The Al Yankovic Story starring Daniel Radcliffe and Evan Rachel Wood. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #295: Harvest Horror Fest - Friday the 13th Part III
Wednesday Oct 26, 2022
Wednesday Oct 26, 2022
All good and horror things must come to an end. Today is the end of our 5th Annual Harvest Horror Fest. For our last film we continue our tradition with Friday the 13th Part III. Not hockey mask related topics include dust spots, 3D for 3D sakes, and horror video games.
These movies just keep getting worse and worse and that’s hard to do! Friday the 13th Part III was an attempt to bring back 3D into the movie theaters. It might have been fun back in 1982 but it does not translate well today. There is just not a whole lot of substance to the story, the acting is really bad, and they don’t even shoot the film at Crystal Lake! There are bikers for some reason but plenty of blood and beast but what about our 3rd B? Nothing! There is maybe a little side boob but for the 80’s? Really? Side boob only? What a let down.
Your hosts differ a bit on this one. Mike really thought Friday the 13th Part III was a bad movie awarding it only 2 out of 5 Reels. Matt on the other hand thinks this movie is bad-good. Basically the movie is so bad that it is fun which makes it good, get all that? This is also the start of what we think of when we think of Jason and the Friday the 13th franchise. Matt awards the flick an average rating of 3 out of 5 Reels.
Next week Matt and Mike play catch up after a month of horror films. The guys head to the theaters to watch a film a couple of weeks old, Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson and Pierce Brosnan. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #294: Harvest Horror Fest - Halloween Ends
Wednesday Oct 19, 2022
Wednesday Oct 19, 2022
Happy Horror Wednesday? Ya that kinda works! Today your two hosts Matt and Mike review their third Harvest Horror Fest film of the season Halloween Ends starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, James Jude Courtney, and Rohan Campbell. Bonus topics include taxes, the She Hulk finale is awful, and bathroom breaks.
This one is a bit of a shocker for your two hosts. The critics and audience just really do not like Halloween Ends but Mike and Matt really enjoyed it. This is not your typical Halloween film. It has plenty of hack and slash but it also has a really good story. There is romance, moving on after trauma, and a very very satisfying end to Michael Myers. We are really going to try to not spoil this one here so let’s just say this, Mike and Matt think you definitely should see this film especially in theaters. It is way better than the 2021 sequel Halloween Kills, heck it might even be the best film of the modern Halloween trilogy. The guys also agree on their rating awarding Halloween Ends 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week we end the 5th Annual Harvest Horror Fest the same way we have ended the previous two years with another Friday the 13th flick, Friday the 13th Part III! Maybe this one will be as good as the original since it was intended to be in 3D! Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #293: Harvest Horror Fest - Hellraiser (2022)
Wednesday Oct 12, 2022
Wednesday Oct 12, 2022
Welcome one and all! This week for our second horror film review of the season Mike and Matt check out the reboot of a classic slasher film, Hellraiser (2022) starring Odessa A’zion and Jamie Clayton. Special topics include a new movie giveaway, metal, and horror reboots.
There really isn’t much to say about this film. Hellraiser (2022) was an attempt at creating something a little new and different for the franchise but they only partially succeeded. The story and acting, from the human characters, was just atrocious. Our beloved mythical Cenobites on the other hand were great. The Cenobites had excellent acting with great costumes and makeup but the story as we harp on all the time was just boring.
There is plenty of torture, blood, guts, and gore to satisfy most Hellraiser fans but a lot of the deaths take place off camera. That’s an interesting story telling technique that didn’t work for a film like this. It might be that we just really don’t engage with the human characters let alone care when they are taken to task. Matt and Mike both agree you can skip Hellraiser (2022), it’s just too long and boring. Mike awards the film 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt, not a huge fan of the Hellraiser franchise to begin with, awards it 2 out of 5 Reels.
Next week we hit the theaters for Halloween Ends, the final installment of the latest Halloween trilogy. Don’t forget to enter our giveaway for a free copy of Jo Koy’s debut film Easter Sunday. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #292: Harvest Horror Fest - Poltergeist (1982)
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
Welcome to October! You know what that means, yes it’s time for our annual Harvest Horror Fest! We kick off our 5th annual event with the 1982 classic Poltergeist (1982) in honor of its 40th anniversary. Bonus topics include Prescott Film Festival was amazing, Star Wars, and movie trivia.
What can we say about a film that is as old as your hosts? A lot actually. Poltergeist (1982) is a fun, thrilling, classic jump scare fest with a lot of big names tied to it like Steven Spielberg. The special effects, hokey today, were cutting edge 40 years ago scaring the crap out of viewers. Mike and Matt feel the scariest part of this film is the unknown. you never ever see a visual representation of the poltergeist. You just get hints like sounds, conjured creatures, and a bunch of ghosts but never the actual poltergeist doing the mayhem. Is this film worth a watch, you betcha especially if you have not seen it. It’s classic horror at its finest and you can stream it right now on HBO Max. Mike with a shocking average score gives Poltergeist (1982) 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt, typically not a fan of the horror genre, awards the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week we continue the 5th annual Harvest Horror Fest with a reboot, reimagining, or maybe a retelling of Hellraiser (2022). It drops this Friday only on Hulu. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #291: The Woman King
Wednesday Sep 28, 2022
Wednesday Sep 28, 2022
Hump day is here and you know what that means, a brand new podcast for your ear holes! Today Mike and Matt chat about The Woman King starring Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, and Lashana Lynch. Additional topics today include a new movie giveaway, PSL beer, and the 5th Annual Harvest Horror Fest starts next week!
There is a ton of controversy surrounding this film. Your hosts touch on it a bit during the podcast but not a lot. We are here to talk about the movie itself, have fun, and joke around a bit. The Woman King is a great film. There are a lot of inaccuracies but it is a film not a documentary. The filmmakers chose to take liberties with their story and it is a very good story. The Woman King is almost the complete package. Great acting, amazing sets, incredible costumes, and a wonderful story. It is honestly difficult to make a better film. Mike and Matt both agree this is a must see film especially if you can make it to the theaters. They both award The Woman King 4 out of 5 Reels.
Next week is the start of our 5th annual Harvest Horror Fest! Mike’s favorite time of year because he gets to pick all of the movies! Our first review will be the 1982 classic Poltergeist in honor of its 40th anniversary. Lastly don’t forget to check out the Prescott Film Festival this week and our last pod chatting Helen Stephenson the Director of the festival. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #289: See How They Run
Wednesday Sep 21, 2022
Wednesday Sep 21, 2022
We did it everyone! Matt and Mike returned to the theaters to catch a new movie. See How They Run is a meta murder mystery starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan. Bonus topics include Spaceballs, iPhone 14, and Nick Cage.
Boy does it feel good to get back to the theaters. See How They Run wasn’t the best welcome home film to watch but it wasn’t terrible either. See How They Run is a murder mystery comedy that takes place in 1950’s London. This film is a lot of fun and quite confusing at times. It’s a murder mystery inside a play about a murder mystery play that’s being turn into a film. Got all that? Ya we didn’t either. Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan are excellent and have a huge support cast that builds their character arcs. The cinematography is one of the single best elements of See How They Run other than the twist and turn story.
See How They Run is not a run out and watch film but it is worth a watch when it is available at home. Mike really enjoyed himself and awarded the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt thought the movie was great but really wanted more comedy. He awards it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
For next week's pod we have a double header! Matt sit’s down and chats with the Prescott Film Festival Director Helen Stephenson about the festival’s upcoming 12th year. Mike and Matt also head to the theaters to check out a film that is tearing up the box office, The Woman King starring Viola Davis and John Boyega. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #288: Legacy - Edge of Tomorrow
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
Wednesday Sep 14, 2022
Happy hump day friends and neighbors! For this week’s podcast Mike and Matt chat about a modern Sci-Fi classic Edge of Tomorrow starring Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise. Distracting topics include reading books, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is crap, and modern Sci-Fi.
Well here we go again another Legacy film and you know we only pick Legacy films we really like. Edge of Tomorrow is a great modern Sci-Fi film that doesn’t get enough recognition. This is one of the great modern Sci-Fi flicks that’s the complete package. Great story, great acting, and amazing CGI that stands the test of time. It looks as good if not better than most of the CGI today. Tom Cruise knocks it out of the park as a soldier that doesn’t fight but has to learn how quickly. Emily Blunt steals the show as the resident badass killer of alien scum!
If you have not seen Edge of Tomorrow it really is a must watch movie if you are into action and Sci-Fi. Mike and Matt both agree this movie is almost perfect, awarding it 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
For next week's pod we finally head back to the movie theaters to watch See How They Run. A comedy murder mystery period film starring Sam Rockwell and Adrien Brody. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!

Episode #287: Legacy - Big Trouble in Little China
Wednesday Sep 07, 2022
Wednesday Sep 07, 2022
Welcome one and all to another Reel Film Nerds podcast! Today Matt and Mike try to review the 1986 classic Big Trouble in Little China. We failed miserably and instead chatted about National Cinema Day, is comedy dead, and Avatar.
Well like we alluded to above Mike and Matt tried to chat about Big Trouble in Little China but they got off topic a bunch. This film inspired some of the off topic discussions so maybe we aren’t completely off?
Big Trouble in Little China is a zany, fun, and hilarious film. It blends so many genres it probably should have its own. Kurt Russell is at his prime in this film, rocking a mullet, playing a truck driver, and kicking some ass. What's not to love? James Hong is hilarious and sinister as our main villain. Can you believe that guy has 454 acting credits to his name? WOW! Big Trouble in Little China is not politically correct and we seriously doubt you could make this film today but dang is it a fun ride. Mike Talent awards the movie 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt also really enjoyed watching it again but only awards it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
For next week's attempted review new releases are pretty thin again so Mike picked a Legacy film to review. The 2014 time jump thriller Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Thanks for listening and we will chat with you next week!
