Episode #91: Fighting with My Family
Tuesday Feb 26, 2019
Tuesday Feb 26, 2019
Happy National Pistachio Day! Just digging trying to say something different than happy Tuesday again. It’s new podcast movie review day too. Today Matt and Mike review a heartwarming film about wrestling, Fighting with My Family. Off topics include Mike Talent’s 2020 bid for President, the Academy Awards, and Arizona’s Snowpocalypse 2019.
Fighting with My Family is a fun and emotional comedy perfect for a night out with friends. You don’t have to be a fan of wrestling or even sports to enjoy this movie. Vince Vaughn and Nick Frost both known for their comedic roles knocked it out of the park with dramatic roles in this film. The Rock pops in twice adding a bit of levity during very serious moments. Matt would like to see more wrestling in the film including Paige’s rise through the ranks of NXT eventually winning the NXT Women's Championship belt. Mike Talent gives Fighting with My Family 3 out of 5 Reels. He really enjoyed the story especially how different it was. You do not see many movies about wrestling let alone wrestling families. Matt enjoyed the film as well but felt it was just a little bit above average. He gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. The acting was great, the story was great, he just felt it needed more wrestling.
Coming up on Thursday Matt and Mike review a mystery horror film that lit up Sundance this year, Velvet Buzzsaw by Dan Gilroy writer and director of Nightcrawler. Review the film with us, Velvet Buzzsaw is currently streaming on Netflix. Chat at you on Thursday.

Episode #90: Tributary - Polar
Thursday Feb 21, 2019
Thursday Feb 21, 2019
Welcome faithful listeners, we are on the downslide of hump day and you know what that means, A NEW REEL FILM NERDS PODCAST!!! Today the guys review a new Netflix original streaming film, Polar. It is the second film of the week based on a graphic novel/comic book. Needless to say, Matt is crazy excited! Extra topics this pod include is Hollywood out of ideas, the Coen brothers, and are there too many superhero movies?
Polar is a fun over the top action revenge movie. It drags a bit in the beginning so much so that Mike almost turned it off. It quickly picks up in the middle and quickly ramps up all the way to the end of the film. Polar is very reminiscent of The Raid, John Wick, and Smokin’ Aces all amazing and fun action movies. This is not a drop everything must-see movie but if you have time to spare you will not be disappointed. Mysterious Mike Talent and Just Matt agree, they both give Polar 3 out of 5 Reels.
Thanks for tuning in and joining us on our wild ride through cinema. What do you think about our Tributary movie reviews? Do you want more, less? Write us an email and let us know. Next week the boys will finally get to watch Fighting with My Family. A dramatic comedy biopic based on the true story of WWE super star Saraya “Paige” Bevis and her rise to fame. Have a great weekend and keep warm. We will chat at you on Tuesday.

Episode #89: Alita: Battle Angel
Tuesday Feb 19, 2019
Tuesday Feb 19, 2019
First episode of year two from the Reel Film Nerds podcast and man it’s a highly anticipated movie! Today Mike Talent and Maniac Matt discuss James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s latest epic Alita: Battle Angel. Bonus discussion includes 21st Amendment Brewery, Jennifer Connelly is still super-hot at almost 50, and what exactly is Manga.
Alita: Battle Angel is being destroyed by critics and financially at the box office. Honestly your hosts don’t care. They both really enjoyed the movie and think you should go see it too. Is it the perfect movie, no, but it is a hell of a lot of fun! With that being said it is not for everyone. If you enjoy action, technology, special effects, robots, or comic books you will enjoy this movie. Maniac Matt really liked Alita and almost gave it 4.5 Reels, but he let the film stew in his mind for a day and settled on 4 out of 5 Reels. The biggest issues he had with the film is the just horrible forced love story and the sometimes-rough dialog. Mike Talent also really enjoyed this film and almost gave it 4 out of 5 Reels like Matt but one issue Mike and Matt clearly have a telepathic link. Mr. Talent figured Matt would give it 4 Reels and wanted to make sure he was harsher than Matt. He gives Alita: Battle Angel 3.5 out of 5 Reels. To sum it all up don’t give up on this one before you see it. Go watch it and decide for yourself. The special effects alone are well worth the price of admission.
This Thursday the guys had to change the movie they are reviewing. Fighting with My Family was pushed back a week, why who knows. Instead Mike picked a Tributary film also based on a comic book that was recently released on Netflix, Polar. Thanks for tuning in for the start of our second-year podcasting. Do us a favor and help us grow our listeners this year by telling your friends, rating, and review us on iTunes. Talk at you Thursday!

Episode #88: The Poindexter Awards
Thursday Feb 14, 2019
Thursday Feb 14, 2019
The time is finally here! Are you as pumped as we are for this episode? The first ever Reel Film Nerds Poindexter Awards! It also happens to be our 1-year anniversary by the way. Wow a whole year of us chatting about movies, beer, and life. How is that possible? Here is your warning, this is our longest podcast ever! It is an hour and 45 minutes!
The guys really had a blast recording it well eventually recording it. Mike Talent gave up on trying to get is POS laptop working after 2 hours and grabbed an old desktop to record on. Lots of beers were consumed in the interim which probably helped with the pod.
Here is the run down. There are 25 total categories for the Poindexter Awards. The first part of the podcast your host’s fight it out over their picks in 13 different categories and there can only be one winner per category! Next there are 2 Listeners’ Award categories that all of you voted for well hopefully you voted for. Batting third are the Individual Awards. These categories are more personal, fun, and even zany! Each host gets a pick for each category with some discussion and laughs. Batting cleanup, the boys really get into it on their pick for the first Poindexter Award for Best Movie of the Year. Whew I know that is a lot to process.
Don’t feel pressured to listen to the whole pod if you prefer not to. Of course, we would prefer it if you did. Next Tuesday kicks off year 2 of the RFN Podcast. Matt and Mike are going to do their best to catch a movie twice in theaters, Alita: Battle Angel for Tuesday and Fighting With My Family for Thursday.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for listening to our podcast this past year. If it wasn’t for you, our listeners, we would not be here doing this great podcast. Again, thank you and get ready for an even better second year of talking about film, beer, and God knows what else. Talk at you Tuesday and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Episode #87: Cold Pursuit
Tuesday Feb 12, 2019
Tuesday Feb 12, 2019
Welcome everyone! It is our anniversary week! Now we promised we would only record one episode this week since it’s a giant show, but we lied. Mr. Mike Talent and Matt really wanted to watch Taken in a Blizzard and discuss it. Maybe consider it a bonus episode? The guys rate and review Liam Neeson’s latest revenge film, Cold Pursuit. Extra topics today include talking during movies, zapatos, and the infamous Alamo Drafthouse.
Cold Pursuit is not what the guys thought it was going to be. It feels a lot more like Fargo then it does Taken. It is a revenge film but quickly turns from one story into three stories that intersect in fascinating ways. The cinematography was just beautiful and as Matt pointed out the homes they use as settings are incredible too. They are almost characters in their own right. Is this a must see film in the theaters, nope. If there are no new movies you want to watch at home and can’t wait for the weekend to see a new film, then sure go ahead and watch it. Mike Talent felt Cold Pursuit was ok and not anything special. He did enjoy it, but it fell a bit short for him especially in the story department. He awards Cold Pursuit 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt felt very similar about this film. It was just average. There were parts of it he really enjoyed but overall it was just an average movie. He gives the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
The time has come! This Thursday is our one-year anniversary and our first ever awards show, the Poindexter Awards! Did you get your vote in for the Listeners’ Podcast and Movie of the Year? If not it’s too late. HA! It is going to be a doozy of a show, AKA it is going to be very long. The guys had a blast recording it and we hope you enjoy listening to it. Have a great week and we will really chat at you on Thursday!

Episode #86: Legacy - The Other Guys
Thursday Feb 07, 2019
Thursday Feb 07, 2019
Are you as excited as we are? It’s only a week until our 1 year anniversary and the first ever Poindexter Awards!!! While we both are forced to wait we have a very fun Legacy Cast for you, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s The Other Guys. Extracurricular topics include Matt’s coworkers, our love of Michael Keaton, and do docudramas do more than entertain?
Mike and Matt just love this movie so much so all they did was talk about their favorite parts of it for the entire podcast. The Other Guys is really underrated. It is a much better film than the critics say it is. The jokes and writing are fantastic and the comedic timing is just about perfect. The action is great especially from a mostly comedic director. The inclusion of The Rock and Samuel L. Jackson although very brief is an amazing and fun surprise. Matt gives the film 4 out of 5 Reels. Mike in that rare occasion has a higher rating than Matt. He gives The Other Guys 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
Don’t forget to go vote for your movie of the year on our Facebook page. The poll will come to a close when we record this coming Sunday. The guys promised only one podcast next week well they lied. They both really want to watch and discuss Liam Neeson’s Taken in a blizzard better known as Cold Pursuit. Look for that one on Tuesday and the highly anticipated Poindexter Awards on Thursday! Have an incredible weekend and make sure you go out and catch a movie!

Episode #85: Legacy - Wayne's World
Tuesday Feb 05, 2019
Tuesday Feb 05, 2019
Tuesday is here and that means another incredible podcast review from your besties at the Reel Film Nerds! Today The Talent and Just Matt talk about one of their favorite Legacy Cast’s Wayne’s World, PARTY TIME! Bonus topics include sports ball finale, The Talent’s wedding, and Wayne’s World trivia.
Wayne’s World is a classic incredible film that you must go watch now. The story is amazing and extremely relatable at least for Mike and Matt. The performances are great, the sets are extremely detailed, and the soundtrack oh man the soundtrack is just perfect! Again, if you can’t tell Matt and Mike really love this movie. It’s smart, zany, and incredibly fun. They both give it 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
Thursday your hosts continue the fun and levity with the review of The Other Guys. Another amazing and fun comedy to put it mildly. After the past few weeks of tough hard-hitting movies and upcoming award shows both the hosts just needed some good laughs. Don’t forget to vote for your movie and podcast of the year. If you don’t want to email us, we started a Facebook Poll available at this LINK. Have a great week and we will chat at you Thursday, same pod time, same pod place.

Episode #84: Legacy - Bomb City
Thursday Jan 31, 2019
Thursday Jan 31, 2019
Are you ready for your last pod of the week? No? Well here it is anyways. Today your hosts Mysterious Mike Talent and drunken Matt review a little known film based on a true story, Bomb City. The movie takes place in a small Texas town between two very different clashing social classes. Bonus topics today include #OE4Life, SLC Punk, and your hosts’ high school days.
Bomb City is a very good film. The story is extremely compelling and the way it was told was unique and misdirecting. The acting was not the best by some of the supporting cast but the stars shined brightly. The scenes were setup well and the sets looked great mostly because they were filmed on location in Texas. The dance through the story’s timeline was unique and did not always work. The story though is what really makes this movie great. Mysterious Mike Talent and dumb drunken Matt both agree that Bomb City deserves 4 out of 5 Reels.
The guys are still working out what to watch for next week. Once again the movie theaters do not have much coming out. It is awards season so it is expected. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite film of the year and podcast of the year for our first Poindexter Awards. Have a nice weekend and we will chat at you on Tuesday!

Episode #83: Tributary - Roma
Tuesday Jan 29, 2019
Tuesday Jan 29, 2019
It’s another Tuesday and that means you lucky listeners get another incredible Reel Film Nerds Podcast! Today your host’s Mike Talent and boring Matt discuss a Netflix Original Film that is nominated for multiple Academy Awards including Best Picture, Roma. Other topics include Mexico, voting for the Poindexter Awards, and Netflix movies in theaters.
Roma is a good stylistic film that has a sad and incomplete story. It seems to not really having a beginning or an end. It is not a bad story it is just not compelling. The film’s cinematography is amazing but writer and director Alfonso Cuarón uses a wide-angle pan shot over and over and over. It is incredible the first two or three times you see it, but he just does not stop using it. Mike enjoyed Roma but feels it is just an average film. He gives it 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt enjoyed the film more than Mike, but he really did not like the story. He gives the film 4 out of 5 Reels.
On Thursday the guys talk about a film most if not all of you have never heard of, Bomb City. It is based on a true story that takes place in a small Texas town between two very different clashing social classes. It is available to stream on Amazon Prime right now. Have a great week and we will chat at you Thursday, same time, same place.

Episode #82: Legacy - You Were Never Really Here
Thursday Jan 24, 2019
Thursday Jan 24, 2019
Welcome everyone! Hang in there it is almost Friday then you can get out and catch a movie! Today Mike and Matt review a very dark and thought-provoking film You Were Never Really Here starring Joaquin Phoenix. Off topics include the Academy Awards, our love of Joaquin Phoenix, and equipment failures again but this time it was Mike!
You Were Never Really Here is an incredible film but again it is super dark. Joaquin Phoenix and Ekaterina Samsonov both did amazing jobs acting. The sound design shocked Matt. It was so incredible even on his crappy surround sound system he just couldn’t believe it. The cinematography and directing were amazing as well. This is a must watch film but again here is another warning the subject matter is extremely dark. Matt really likes this film and thinks it should have garnered more viewings and award nominations than it has. He gives it a great score of 4 out of 5 Reels. Mike also really enjoyed You Were Never Really Here. The darkness and subject matter did put him off just a bit, but he still liked the film a lot. He gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
The guys are still trying to figure out what they want to review for next week. The theaters are pretty light right now with new releases. Matt wants to review a couple of films that your hosts missed in the theaters because of their fairly small releases, Bomb City and Eighth Grade. Tune in on Tuesday to see what they settle on. Chat with you then!

Episode #81: Glass
Tuesday Jan 22, 2019
Tuesday Jan 22, 2019
Well what do we have here another Tuesday? You know what that means it’s time for a new Reel Film Nerds podcast for your listening pleasure! Today your hosts talk about the latest M. Night Shyamalan flick, Glass. Matt really starts the pod out off topic, sorry, we will work on reining him in on Thursday. The copious off topics include the new Fyre Festival documentaries, Punisher Season 2, and Matt guest stars on The Mile High Show Episode #199 and The Blue Milk Podcast’s upcoming Episode 66 about the Sith!
Mike and Mat are extremely confused about Glass. They do not understand why the critics hate this film. It is not the best M. Night Shyamalan movie but it is definitely not his worst. James McAvoy’s acting is out of this world! Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis do a great job as well especially during some nonverbal scenes. The soundtrack is good and the cinematography is great except for a couple of times where it looked like they used a GoPro. Your hosts both really enjoyed the movie but it is not a must see in the theaters unless you want to go to the movies because there really is not much out right now. Mike gives Glass a respectable 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt enjoyed the film just a hair more than Mike; he gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels.
This Thursday the guys will finally get around to reviewing You Were Never Really Here. If you want to watch it before the review on Thursday it is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Chat at you then.

Episode #80: Legacy - Clyde Cooper
Thursday Jan 17, 2019
Thursday Jan 17, 2019
Good day everyone! Today Matt and Mysterious Mike have a real treat for you. They received their first ever screener!! Exciting right? It is for us! The film the guys are chatting about is titled Clyde Cooper. It is a detective film noir murder mystery B movie that takes place in Silicon Valley. Off topics for this episode include the Micro Machine guy, power hour, and vaping.
Clyde Cooper is an interesting story but a rough execution. The writing is really bad and flat out doesn’t make sense at times. The acting really could have been a lot better. Some of the camera angles and shooting styles that were chosen to tell the story did not work. The opening of the film is very strange and could have been completely left out or explained more. This film just left your hosts wanting more. It feels rushed and really could have been entertaining if it was executed right. Mysterious Mike gives Clyde Cooper 1 out 5 Reels. Matt is a little more generous as always because he did enjoy the story as a whole. The premise intrigued him. He gives the film 1.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week your hosts return with a review of Glass the highly anticipated sequel to Unbreakable and Split. Let’s hope all the critics are wrong and that Glass is a good movie. We will let you know Tuesday. Our second pod of the week on Thursday, the guys will finally get around to reviewing You Were Never Really Here after talking about it for over a week. If you have Amazon Prime it is streaming there right now. Watch it along with us. Thanks for listening and we will chat at you next week.

Episode #79: Replicas
Tuesday Jan 15, 2019
Tuesday Jan 15, 2019
Happy Tuesday everyone, literally it’s one of the worst days of the week. Yes everyone says it’s Monday but we all know it is really Tuesday except for the tacos. Today your two co-hosts review Keanu Reeves first craptastic film of 2019, Replicas. Serious Keanu just stick with John Wick those films are incredible. Bonus topics this week include Altered Carbon, movie critics suck, and Matt has a case of the Monday’s.
Replicas is just an all around bad movie. The acting was terrible, they tried to cram too many stories into an hour and 47 minute film, oh and did I mention the acting was terrible, yes?, just wanted to make sure. If you love sci-fi, cloning, and a dystopian future just go watch the Netflix TV show Altered Carbon. It is similar to Replicas in a lot of ways but a hell of a lot better. Matt and Mike cannot recommend anyone to go see this film. It’s just bad. They both graciously give it 2 out of 5 Reels.
Coming up on Thursday the guys received their very first screener from a movie studio, Clyde Cooper. It is a film noir crime drama based in Silicon Valley dealing with tech and deception. Episode #78: Tributary - Bird Box
Thursday Jan 10, 2019
Thursday Jan 10, 2019
Hi everybody! Welcome back to the Reel Film Nerds Podcast! Today Matt’s backup mic is working great! Overtime even because it literally picks up every sound in the room. Today Mysterious Mike and Matt bring you a new Tributary cast with their review of Bird Box. Off topic topics include a new segment what are you drinking, The Walking Dead, lack of time in our lives, and lastly the first RFN awards show!
Bird Box is basically a mash up between A Quiet Place (RFN Episode #10) and The Happening. It is an incredible thrill ride from start to finish. The acting is incredible especially by Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich but honestly when do they not shine? The story is very good, and the sets look great. I think this is starting to become an issue, but both of your hosts agree Bird Box has a great showing for Mike and an average showing for Matt with 3.5 out of 5 Reels! This is a must see sci-fi thriller even if you do not have Netflix. Just steal a friend or co-workers login and watch it.
Next week the guys plan on watching the new Keanu Reeves film Replicas and either Bomb City or You Were Never Really Here. Both are currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Thanks for your continued support of our podcast. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoy recording it! Chat with you next Tuesday!

Episode #77: Aquaman
Tuesday Jan 08, 2019
Tuesday Jan 08, 2019
Hi everybody and welcome to another craptastic Reel Film Nerds podcast! Hey its been a long time since we had a truly craptastic episode and it's all Matt's fault! He had some serious recording issues this episode, so his audio is hot garbage. Mysterious Mike sounds great so only have the podcast is craptastic? Back on point, something broke in his mic and he did not know it so if you skip this pod we understand just don't skip seeing Aquaman in the theaters. The guys still had fun and got off topic probably too much while talking about Aquaman. Extracurricular topics include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Disney taking over the world, Star Wars of course, and Marvel versus DC.
Both of your hosts loved Aquaman. It is a fun cheesy movie with gobs of action and incredible visuals. This is what superhero movies are supposed to be. Not all of them must be extremely serious and grounded. Having one be an amazing popcorn action flick where the actors had tons of fun making it is refreshing. Mysterious Mike and Matt agree Aquaman is a must see in theaters basically because it is just so darn pretty! They both give the film 4 out of 5 Reels!
This Thursday the guys talk about the Netflix movie that is exploding across the Internets, Bird Box. They attempt to understand why it is so popular and even sparking Internet challenges. Chat at you on Thursday where we promise the audio won’t sound like crap, well less crap Matt is still co-hosting the podcast for now.

Episode #76: Triple Feature
Thursday Jan 03, 2019
Thursday Jan 03, 2019
Welcome everyone to our first Triple Feature episode. We did our best to keep it to a half hour but failed miserably. Today your amazing hosts Matt and Mysterious Mike reviewed Bumblebee, Welcome to Marwen, and Vice. Extracurricular topics included wrestling actors, camera’s, and politics. To tell you the truth they mostly kept on topic throughout each review. Matt even reigned in Mike a couple of times if you can believe it!
We are going to try to keep our show notes short and sweet so you can spend your time listen to our pod and not reading about it. To sum it all up quickly go see Bumblebee and Vice. Skip Welcome to Marwen unless you are really bored and want to see Steve Carell give one of his best performances ever. Here go our ratings if you want to skip actual podcast. Bumblebee, Matt likes it a ton but he is a giant nerd who grew up loving Transformers. He gives it 4 out of 5 Reels. Mike really enjoyed it but like always is harsh with his ratings, he gives Bumblebee 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Neither of your hosts thought highly of Welcome to Marwen. Mike gives it 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt really was let down by this film and rated it lower than Mike giving it 2 out of 5 Reels. Our last review is Adam McKay’s Vice. Matt really enjoyed Vice but thought some of the story telling elements were just weird and take you out of the film. He awards Vice 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Mike on the other hand really loved Vice awarding it his highest rating of the 3 films with 4 out of 5 Reels.
We hope you enjoyed our first Triple Feature podcast. If you did or did not please email or message us and let us know. Maybe we will do this again when another movie-pocalypse is upon us! Next week Matt and Mike review Aquaman on Tuesday and another film on Thursday. What film is the question. Maybe that new Netflix movie everyone is losing their minds over Bird Box. Chat at you on Tuesday!

Episode #75: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Tuesday Jan 01, 2019
Tuesday Jan 01, 2019
Welcome to 2019 everyone! Today your insane host’s Mysterious Mike and Matt review a movie everyone in the world has probably seen but we are reviewing it anyways, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Matt has a full-on nerd melt down so here’s your warning. It is not as bad as when we review a Star Wars movie, but it is pretty dang close. Topics today also include snow, IMAX, the Universal Monsters, and finally our podcast goals for 2019.
The guys agree Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a ground-breaking film and really should be seen by everyone. It is like watching a comic book come to life on the big screen. The animation is out of this world, the voice acting is incredible, and the story is just a whole lot of fun to say the least. Matt loved this movie. There were very very minor issues with it in his eyes just enough to drop it down a little bit from a perfect score. He awards Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a 4.5 out of 5 Reels. Mike also loved this film but not as much as Matt. He is quickly becoming a film curmudgeon, and nothing is ever good enough for one of those. He gives the animated Spider-Man flick a respectable 4 out of 5 Reels.
Winter Movie-pocalypse 2018 comes to a head this Thursday when your hosts attempt to review not 1, not 2, but 3, yes 3 movies in one podcast! The 3 films in reviewed order are Bumblebee, Welcome to Marwen, and Vice. We hope you are enjoying our attempt to watch every movie this holiday season and that our reviews are helping you to make the right choice on what to spend your money on. Episode #74: Legacy - Die Hard
Tuesday Dec 25, 2018
Tuesday Dec 25, 2018
Merry Christmas everyone!!!! We hope you opened lots of presents this morning and got everything you ever wanted. Your hosts Matt and Mysterious Mike sure as hell didn’t. Back on topic today in honor of Christmas we review one of Mike’s favorite Christmas movies of all time, Die Hard. The guys talk about their first R rated movies, the hot mess that is Skyscraper, and their family Christmas get together's. Grab a cool glass of eggnog and enjoy our review of Die Hard!
Die Hard is one of the many great 1980’s action films in cinematic history. The action is fantastic, the sets look incredible, and Bruce Willis is the every-man action hero guys want to be and women want to be with. I think this goes without saying but Mysterious Mike loves this movie with all his heart. He awards it his second perfect score in RFN history with 5 out of 5 Reels. Matt really likes Die Hard a lot too but re-watching it definitely does not stand the test of time as well as it should. He gives Die Hard a very good rating of 4.5 out of 5 Reels.
Thanks everyone for joining us for this super special Die Hard Christmas episode of the Reel Film Nerds Podcast. We will not have an episode on Thursday thanks to your hosts busy holiday schedules. They will return with the two films they promised to review this week, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Welcome to Marwen with maybe even more reviews if they have the time to chat this weekend.

Episode #73: Mortal Engines
Thursday Dec 20, 2018
Thursday Dec 20, 2018
Merry almost Christmas everyone! Today we have a review of a movie you should never see, Mortal Engines. The guys don’t mess around and just get right into it with this review, this is a bad movie. Topics today included the Mars TV show, Steve Carell, and Mike taking notes again.
Mortal Engines is just a terrible movie. The only redeeming part is the visual effects and the first 30 minutes that actually has a predator city chasing down another city. Seriously that’s it in a movie based on predator cities one damn chase scene! There is no character development at all. The script poorly written, it comes off as a third movie in a trilogy when it’s the start of a new franchise? Mortal Engines also rips off so many sci-fi and fantasy films including Star Wars that we lost count. Mike flat out blasted this movie. He really tore it apart more than usual. He graciously gives Mortal Engines ½ a Reel out of 5. Matt was very disappointed by this film. He had very high hopes for it because it appears to be a very cool and fun world to tell stories in. This first attempt failed miserably though. He gives the film a more lenient score with 1.5 out of 5 Reels.
Next week the guys keep the reviews coming! They are both out watching as many of the new films hitting the theaters as possible. Reviews next week include the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Robert Zemeckis’ Welcome to Marwen but they might toss in a few quick reviews to let you know what to see over your holiday break. Chat with all of you next week and we hope you get lots of awesome movies for Christmas!

Episode #72: The Mule (2018)
Tuesday Dec 18, 2018
Tuesday Dec 18, 2018
Morning everyone and welcome to another episode of the Reel Film Nerds podcast! Winter Movie-pocalypse 2018 is upon us and your hosts start it out with Clint Eastwood’s latest masterwork The Mule (2018). Mysterious Mike and Mean Matt do get off topic a bit in this pod, but it is hard to talk about Clint Eastwood and not about Westerns. Topics today include That’s What She Said, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Deadwood.
The Mule (2018) is another stellar film from one of our acting and directing greats. The casting is spot on, the story is incredible, and Clint Eastwood’s performance is one for the books. Mike loved The Mule (2018) and thinks everyone should watch it but seeing it in the theater is not a must. Matt agrees it was an incredible film, but he compares it to some of Eastwood’s other great films and feels it falls a tiny bit short of them. They both award The Mule (2018) with 4 out of 5 Reels.
This Thursday the guys continue Winter Movie-pocalypse 2018 with another new podcast review of a film that was released this past weekend, Mortal Engines. Spoiler Alert for the podcast and the movie, it is crap! Seriously don’t see this film but do listen to our podcast. Mike comes out of his shell a bit and just tears this movie apart. Chat with you on Thursday!

Episode #71: Legacy - Fred Claus
Thursday Dec 13, 2018
Thursday Dec 13, 2018
Welcome fellow movie lovers to another exciting installment of the Real Film Nerds Podcast. I am not going to beat around the bush on this one. We started to talk about our latest film Fred Claus, but it quickly turned into a discussion about Kevin Spacey and if we should be watching the films he stars in. It is a fascinating discussion about art and film that is worth listening too. Fred Claus just took a back seat for a while, a long while. The guys also discuss how many movies a year does it take to call yourself a reviewer, its not as many as you would guess.
Fred Claus is basically the Christmas movie Matt would make but without the happy ending. This movie can be very dark and funny at the same time. The cast is fantastic and the acting is pretty solid too. Mike does not hate Fred Claus but it is nothing special to him either. He gives it 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt likes the film quite a bit especially the story. He gives Fred Claus 4 out of 5 Reels.
Movie-pocalypse starts this Friday! The guys are going to try to see as many movies they can and tell you if they are worth spending your hard-earned money on. It will be very difficult to have individual podcasts for each film so keep your ears out for possible podcast combos. We will return on Tuesday with a fresh new dose of the Reel Film Nerds Podcast!

Episode #70: Legacy - Unsane
Tuesday Dec 11, 2018
Tuesday Dec 11, 2018
Hello there and welcome another new RFN podcast. We can’t quit you! Today our hosts review a film from earlier this year that was not in the theaters long, Unsane. Today’s review was requested from one of our faithful listeners, Patrick! Thanks, Pat, for your support and keep listening and requesting. Mysterious Mike and Matt stay on point for once with this movie. Extracurricular topics include iPhones, The Girl in the Spider’s Web book and movie, and the importance of story in a film.
Unsane is a phycological thriller with great acting, an amazing story, and believe it or not the film was shot on a damn iPhone! This one never lets up and constantly has you questioning who is the sane and who is not until the very end of the movie. Matt really enjoyed this film but had a few little complaints here and there but nothing major. He gives it 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Mike too really enjoyed this film but is almost always harsher than Matt when it comes to his ratings. He gives Unsane 3 Reels out of 5. Basically, they both agree this is a must-see film especially if you have Amazon Prime where you can currently stream it.

Episode #69: Legacy - Hackers
Thursday Dec 06, 2018
Thursday Dec 06, 2018
Wow do we have a special podcast for you today, well it’s special to Mysterious Mike and Amazing Matt. Today your two hosts discuss a film that basically changed their lives, Hackers. This film helped fuel them to the careers they now have and their deep passions for technology. The gents do talk about the movie but not as much as they should have. The talk mainly focuses on how Hackers helped influence Mike’s decision to go into computer programming, public pay phones, and online gaming over dial up, yes you read that right youngsters dial up online gaming!
Hackers is an amazing movie, Matt and Mike are biased as hell though. When you watch it today with all our technological advances it comes off extremely cheesy. It’s a 90’s movie through and through from the rollerblades, to the EDM soundtrack, to the chain wallets. If you grew up in the 90’s like your hosts did this movie will take you back there. Just a friendly reminder that your hosts are super biased in favor of this film, they love it to death! Mike and Matt give Hackers 4 out of 5 Reels. Their freshman high school selves would have given it 5 out of 5 Reels in the 90’s but it’s not the 90’s anymore.
Thanks for tuning in for an amazing Legacy Cast of Hackers. Your hosts really had a blast recording it even if you don’t like listening to it. Please do us a favor and tell your friends about the RFN podcast. Don’t forget to subscribe and listen to our sister podcasts Rogues Radio, Code 3 Podcast, The Blue Milk Podcast, and The Mile High Show. Episode #68: Ralph Breaks the Internet
Tuesday Dec 04, 2018
Tuesday Dec 04, 2018
Howdy friends and welcome back to another amazing movie review by your two blabbermouths Mysterious Mike and Annoying Matt. Today your hosts discuss Disney’s latest animated feature Ralph Breaks the Internet. Topics this episode include Matt being a loner, relationship sacrifices, Star Wars, and the millions of movies coming to theaters in December.
Ralph Breaks the Internet is a very fun entertaining movie that is probably not the best for kids. There are tons of jokes and internet references that might be over most kids’ heads. The animation is stellar as always and the voice acting is just as good. There were some parts of the story that could have been left out though. They were just not needed and made the film longer than it needed to be. Matt enjoyed Ralph Breaks the Internet but felt it was just average. There were some amazing parts but overall this movie was nothing special to him. He gives it 3 out of 5 Reels. Mike also enjoyed the film but thought it could have been better too. He loved the many Internet references and the ripping of Disney. He also gives the movie a respectable 3 out of 5 Reels.

Don’t forget to subscribe and listen to our sister podcasts Rogues Radio, Code 3 Podcast, The Blue Milk Podcast, and The Mile High Show. Episode #67: Widows
Thursday Nov 29, 2018
Thursday Nov 29, 2018
Namaste everybody and welcome to your second RFN pod of the week! Today your hosts review Widows a slow burn Chicago based heist movie from director Steve McQueen starring Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, and Elizabeth Debicki. Mike does his best to keep Matt on topic and pretty much succeeds. Topics this episode go like this Matt hates Christmas, Mike is Matt’s brother at least in spirit, the trailer and marketing screwed this movie, and Mike’s MCU tie-in streak continues!!!
Widows is a long drawn out movie that needs to spend a bit more time in the editing bay. The character development is great and maybe even over done. How much development do we really need on so many side characters? The acting was incredible especially from the three main actresses. Mike really enjoyed Widows and thinks it is worth the trip to the theater. He awards it 3 out of 5 Reels. Matt was not a huge fan of the film. He thought it was boring especially the first two acts. He loved the acting and the story as whole but still thinks it is just an average film. He also gives Widows 3 out of 5 Reels.
Thanks for your continued support of our podcast. Without you our listeners, this podcast would not exist, seriously.
